HOW OFTEN

How Often Should You Clean Your Chimney?

The NFPA recommends at minimum an annual inspection, with cleaning as needed based on usage. Here’s a quick guide based on how you use your fireplace.

Once Per Year — Minimum

Every fireplace should be inspected and cleaned at least once annually — ideally before the heating season begins in fall. This applies regardless of how often you use it.

More Often — Frequent Use

If you use your fireplace regularly (more than 2–3 times per week during the season), consider cleaning twice per year — at the start and end of the burning season.

Immediately — New Home

If you've just moved into a home with a fireplace or haven't used it in several years, schedule a cleaning and full inspection before your first fire — no matter when the last service was.
